Soil is composed of particles of different size. Here they are shown in separate layers. Clay is a very small particle, sand is much larger. Soil also contains water, air, HUMUS and living organisms. Humus consists of decayed plant and animal matter. It gives soil a good crumb structure. This helps air and water pass into plant roots. It also provides food for earthworms.
